Full-time Position

Founded in 1908 Settlement Music School, a non-profit organization, is one of the largest community schools of the arts in the United States serving children and adults of all ages at five branches in Pennsylvania located in South, West and Northeast Philadelphia, Germantown, Willow Grove, and its virtual branch, Settlement Music Online. Settlement provides $3 million dollars each year in financial aid and scholarships to 60% of its students. Settlement’s reach is broad, and it continues the principles of its Founders, that there be no barriers to participating in music and arts education.

Settlement Music School is one of only 18 community schools of the arts in the country that has national accreditation through ACCPAS – the Accrediting Commission of Community and Precollegiate Arts School.

Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant reports to the Chief Financial Officer and supports the day-to-day financial operations of the school.

Responsibilities

• Perform monthly bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
• Assist with month-end close activities, including preparation of journal entries.
• Record cash receipts, deposit checks, and post related transactions to the general ledger.
• Monitor and track accounts receivable balances, supporting collection efforts as needed.
• Manage and oversee third-party billing processes.
• Reconcile donor-related financial activity with the Advancement department.
• Track unemployment claims and coordinate responses with relevant agencies.
• Provide administrative support to the Finance Department, including processing incoming mail and coordinating office supplies.
• Support the annual audit process by compiling requested documentation, preparing account reconciliations, and responding to auditor inquiries.
• Maintain accurate financial records and assist with special projects and other accounting duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field.
• Three to five years of nonprofit accounting experience.
• Experience with accounting software and general ledger systems required.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with colleagues.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Salary range: $60,000 – $65,000
