Job Description

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Theatre Arts Department at Butte College is a growing, multifaceted program that offers students training in performance, production, and the study of theatre. The department presents a regular season of plays and musicals, and offers coursework in acting, theatre history and appreciation, directing, and technical theatre, providing students with both academic foundations and hands-on production experience. Through collaborative, production-based learning, students develop artistic skills, critical thinking, and practical knowledge that’s applicable to transfer and professional pathways. The department is committed to inclusive, student-centered practices.  The program seeks dynamic leadership to guide its artistic vision, curriculum development, and expanding role within the Performing Arts at Butte College.

Butte College is committed to equity and inclusion and values the diverse backgrounds of its campus community. Strong candidates will demonstrate experience supporting individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including persons with disabilities, individuals of different gender identities and sexual orientations, and those from historically underrepresented communities and other groups.

As an institution, Butte College is committed to eliminating the equity gap in all student populations with dynamic, learner-centered practices and policies.  The successful candidate will join a district dedicated to the use of culturally responsive teaching strategies and methods that meet the varying needs of our students and ensure a successful learning environment.

POSITION DUTIES:

Under the supervision of the Dean of Instruction, the Theatre Arts Instructor will develop, prepare, and teach courses for Theatre Arts majors as well as general education students, including acting, directing, theatre history and appreciation, musical theatre, and technical theatre, based on the candidate’s particular strengths and interests and on the needs of the Theatre Arts Department. The college is particularly seeking a candidate to serve as a lead faculty member who can provide artistic, curricular, and programmatic leadership for a growing Theatre Arts program.

Ideal candidates will possess the competence, vision, and energy required to build and sustain a vibrant theatre program; contribute to departmental initiatives; and provide direction, organization, outreach, and recruitment through the development of strong relationships with K–12 schools, community partners, and the broader region. The instructor will contribute to the planning and coordination of an expanding production season and curriculum, balancing general education offerings with courses for majors, performance, and technical training.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Teaching experience in Theatre Arts, preferably at the community college level, is desired.
  • Ability to contribute to a growing, production-driven Theatre Arts program through effective instruction, artistic leadership, and collaboration.
  • Exhibit the potential to support institutional vitality through program development, student engagement, community and high school outreach, and a commitment to inclusive, student-centered teaching practices.
  • Subject matter competency in Theatre Arts, including performance, directing, theatre history and appreciation, and/or technical theatre, based on the candidate’s experience.
  • Ability to examine and enhance one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support students.
  • Culturally responsive pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging students who are historically underrepresented and underserved in traditional classrooms.
  • Ability to fairly and effectively evaluate student progress while skillfully addressing issues of equity in the classroom, including handling cross-cultural situations with sensitivity and compassion.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials; motivation and evaluation techniques for student progress.
  • Experience working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.
  • Experience with educational technology, including online instruction, such as Canvas or Blackboard, etc.
  • Experience in the development and/or review of courses and curriculum.
  • Knowledge of the community college system, its mission, and goals.
  • Experience directing and overseeing theatrical productions, including plays and musicals, mentoring student performers, directors, and technicians.
  • Demonstrated professional experience and artistic competence in theatre, with background as a performer, director, designer, technician, or educator, appropriate to the discipline.
